Do you need Canadian hosting if your website uses a CDN?

A CDN can deliver cached files closer to visitors while the origin stays elsewhere. Compare three request paths before choosing or moving your hosting.

A CDN can make reusable website files easier to deliver to visitors in Canada while your main server remains elsewhere. It does not move that origin server into Canada. If the project requires Canadian storage or processing, a CDN must be assessed separately from the hosting location.

Start by comparing hosting packages for the website itself. Check origin options and whether a suitable CDN is included, then decide which problem you need to solve. “CDN included” is not a country-of-storage statement.

The origin and the cached copy

The origin is the website’s main source: for a normal WordPress installation, it runs the application and database. A content delivery network stores or delivers some content through a distributed network. The response depends on what is cached and how that particular service is configured.

Cloudflare’s current documentation makes static assets eligible for caching by default, while HTML is not cached by default. Other settings and technologies can change that behaviour. A CDN badge therefore does not mean that every page or database request is answered from a nearby copy.

Three visits to the same fictional website

Assume a small business has its main site on a US origin and uses a CDN. These are hypothetical request paths, not measured timings.

1. A visitor requests an already cached photograph

The CDN can return its stored copy without fetching that file from the origin again. This is where delivery near the audience can help. It does not establish where the original upload or WordPress database lives.

2. The photograph is not in the responding cache

The CDN needs to obtain the file from the origin or its configured upstream cache. That additional request means the origin path still matters. A test that repeatedly loads one cached image does not represent every first request to the site.

3. A customer opens a personal account or checkout

Personalized content needs the right handling for that user. Ordinary static caching cannot simply reuse another person’s response. The application and its data may still be served or processed at the origin, depending on the architecture. The host’s resources and connectivity therefore remain relevant.

Decision: assess the requests your customers actually make. Do not move hosting because one image is slow, or assume a CDN has solved a slow booking or checkout flow.

Two briefs, two different next steps

Public brochure site, no country restriction: an owner has a working host and visitors spread across Canada. Ask the maintainer to review image size, caching and representative page loading before buying a migration. A CDN may address asset delivery without changing the origin. Compare like-for-like pages, devices and cache conditions; this article does not establish a speed winner.

Project with specified Canadian storage: the owner needs the database, uploads and recovery copies in Canada. Select an eligible origin and backup arrangement first. Ask what the CDN stores, where processing can happen and whether its available controls meet the actual requirement. A Canadian edge response by itself is insufficient evidence.

HostPapa, which appears near the top of the shared-hosting listing, documents Toronto among its origin locations and describes global CDN delivery separately. Confirm both the selected hosting destination and the CDN inclusion for the exact plan. Do not assume that every package uses Toronto or that a CDN can be restricted to Canada by default.

Ask for evidence before changing cache rules

  • Which important page requests are served from cache, and which reach the origin?
  • Are account, cart and checkout responses excluded from shared caching as required by the application?
  • Are images served by this CDN, an external image service or the original host?
  • Does the project have a country requirement covering cached copies, logs or processing as well as the database?

These are review questions for the maintainer, not instructions to enable “cache everything”. A public IP lookup is also inconclusive: Cloudflare’s proxied DNS can return its own network address rather than the origin address. Do not disable protection to discover the host.

For the overall country decision, use our guide to choosing hosting in Canada or the US. Bring the resulting brief to the hosting comparison and choose origin capacity, recovery and delivery features together.
